I had the exact problem.  The solution I have found thus far, through
lots trial and error, is that in the ppp.linkup file, I removed the
ADD 0 0 HISADDR, and added this:

	add default xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx HISADDR

(where xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx is the netmask prolly 255.255.255.0)

I did too, it didn't help me much either.
