I am using the Walnut Creek cd rom to install 2.1.0 freeBSD on a
532 Mb partition on my Pentium. I get as far as it asking for a medium
and cannot get it to recognize the cd at this point.

What I have tried so far is to use the following files to create a
boot disk and boot from it. Neither seem to help; I get to the same
error message as when installing from the cd using its install.exe
from DOS. i.e. when I boot from either it brings up the screen that
allows me to start the "novice" install as one option.

The two boot disks I have created were using:

ATAPIFLP.BAT, which says:

@echo off
echo Format a single floppy when asked, then exit format.
format /u a:
echo Now writing the atapi.flp image onto the floppy. Please wait..
echo Please also note that this will only configure your IDE CDROM
echo for INSTALLATION purposes. You will still need to configure your
echo kernel to use the CDROM (assuming that it works at all) after
echo the system is installed. You can use the kernel.ATAPI image on
echo the second CD or build your own (see handbook for details on
building
echo your own kernel).
tools\rawrite.exe floppies\atapi.flp a
echo
echo Done! When you are ready to install, make sure that the boot
floppy
echo is in drive A and press the reset button.
pause
echo on

and the INST_IDE.BAT, which has the one line:

fbsdboot.exe -D kernel.IDE

My cd is a Sony 2-spd/IDE-ATAPI/256ms/256K

According to the advice I have recieved so far at least one of these
should allow the media part of the install to find the cd, no? Is
there some other set up I need to carry out?
