The only difference of using this card vs. a plain IDE system is that
it is a bus-master DMA controller.  If this is causing you troubles
and panics, it smells like your chipset might have problems with
bus-masters, or the cache RAM is iffy.

Try turning your cache into write-back (if you can), or turn it
entirely off just to make sure.

The AHA1542CP is supposed to work with 2.1.5 and 2.2 systems, i don't
think it requires any specific settings.
