At least it works on one machine where I installed FreeBSD (starting with
2.0.5., upgraded to 2.1, since then running stable for more than a month
between reboots depending of the power support.)

That special machine contained a IDE disk (on board adapter, 486 mother-
board, ISA/PCI) and SCSI disk and CD-ROM connected to an Adaptec AHA-1542B.
Now it contains an NCR 53C810 based PCI adapter and it works flawlessly,
too.

Did you check the I/O address, interrupt and DMA settings? Is the Adaptec's
BIOS enabled or disabled? I had problems with enabled Adaptec BIOS on a VLB
motherboard.

What error messages do you get when trying to install?
