I guess that's when sometimes a little too much U*IX knowledge can be

It looks like to me you'll have to boot from floppy.
You do have a rescue floppy at hand right?
If you don't have one already, you can probably use the 
"fixit" disk that comes with the FreeBSD distribution

Once you boot up with floppy, login as root without passwd,
mount your harddrive partition under /mnt
and do whatever fix you want
