Remember that the Xserver usually wants to use an empty VT (with no
getty or shell already running).  It might also work, but is probably
less happy ;) on your login VT.

Try forcing it to a particular VT with

X -query some.server :4 vt02

(e.g., if you are currently logged int /dev/ttyv1 -- this is what X11
calls `vt02' following the SysV naming tradition).
