Sorry, I don't know much about cd rom drives - I recompiled my 2.1.0 kernel
with the ATAPI cd rom option and it worked perfectly ever since.
Before using a cd, you have to mount it - I think it was something like
mount -t ISO9660 /dev/wcd0 /cdrom
where /cdrom is a normal, empty directory. (I don't recall it exactly, I
have an alias for this :-) ).

As for the boot messages - on the virtual terminals, you can press "scroll
lock" and then scroll back using the cursor up/down keys. The buffer is
100 lines big, I think - not big enough for the complete boot messages,
though.

The boot messages of the last few boots are also logged in /var/db/log or
/var/log or something similar.
Root can also view the messages of the last boot with the dmesg command.
