i'm running an irc server on freebsd, and i'm trying to raise the number of
connections it will allow. before i started the ircd process, i did:
> limit
descriptors 64

> limit descriptors 360

> limit
descriptors 360

(other limits snipped)

anyway, i started the server, but it still seems to max out at the same
number of connections (around 240). is there something we need to change
in the kernel and recompile? i was under the impression freebsd could
change this on the fly.

> netstat -n | grep tcp | wc -l
     277

man limit brings up the csh manpage, but it doesn't mention anything about
the descriptors.. do i need to limit -h? i'd do trial and error, but it's
really inconvenient to stop and restart the server for all the people
connected to it. also i'd have to wait for a couple hundred people to
connect to see if it worked, so any help will be appreciated. btw:
