I had this same problem ( cmd fail) yesterday,too  : I tried to install the scsibeta3  package that Julian posted a few weeks ago. 

After that had failed I logged into ref.tfs.com, went into julians 'living room', (he was out :-) , tar/compressed all .shar files and transfered them 
to my home system, went into /sys, and untared directly into the dirs of the
kern,i386,scsi sources. After that I rebuilt the kernel from a clean
directory (make clean, make depend, make) and had a working system again.
