I'm using a 386sx unsure of the motherboard manufacturer, 1989 AMI bios
(not translating bios), and a Seagate ST31276A hard drive... the HD came
with a software overlay that allowed users with older bioses (like myself)
to use the full 1275MB capacity of the drive. In the installation
instructions it said that for "other operating systems" you needed to
format the drive with "bios standard" format in order for other operating
systems to work with the software overlay (seagate calls this a DDO,
Dynamic Disk Overlay). I formatted the drive with bios standard format,
but still got the panic!: EISA I/O error.

I gave up on freebsd (just assumed I wasn't going to figure it out) and
tried out a mini-linux distribution (at least its SOMETHING), but it
didn't like my setup either. It complained about my drive having more
than 16 heads and said it was probably due to a unrecognized sector
translation (which I assume is the seagate drive overlay).

I'd love to get freebsd up and running. I'm desperate for something
besides dos to work with.

I would really appreciate any ideas/suggestions on how to get past this.
If you need specs on the motherboard let me know, I'll open her up again
and get exacts...

thanks
