Which version of gcc, which arch ?
On NetBSD 1.1 you must keep the old. On NetBSD 1.2 you should be able to
compile a kernel with the new one. However this is not recommended, because
nobody will be able to help you if you have problems with kernels compiled
with a non-netbsd gcc.
NetBSD1.2 is shipped with gcc 2.7.2 which is really stable on i386 and sparc.
