That sounds a little harsh for a bad monitor spec.  In similar
situations, I've usually just gotten a message that a matching
video card/monitor pair can't be found.  Have you tried using the
VGA or Mono drivers (which are 16 and 2 colors, respectively, and
should work on anything)?
