I've tried searching and searching, but I can't find any help so I'll
cautiously post this question which has probably been asked many times
before I got here. 8-)

In the Technical Support for FreeBSD, it talks about Sony CD-ROM
support being for all models. But in other areas (I can't remember
where else exactly), it only mentions 31Aish support. I have an old
Sony CD-ROM which I believe is a CDU-53x model. And I don't believe
that FreeBSD supports it -- at least I can't get FB to see the drive.

Is it true that 2.1.5 supports ALL Sony CD-ROM drives? If so, what am
I missing? Do I have to build a new kernel to get it supported? I
can do that.

If it's not true that this drive is supported, how difficult would it
be to port Linux's SONYCD driver to FreeBSD? I'm a newbie when it
comes to device drivers but not to systems programming. Would a
straight Linux->BSD conversion work? Or are there other aspects
involved that I don't know about.

Thanks for the time to answer.
