Technically this fits better in alt.bbs.unixbbs than in the FreeBSD groups...

Actually, You might want to stay away from "waffle", IMHO it's not much better
than the _FREE_ BBS packages for Unix you'll find on some of the FTP
archives (There used to be a great one in Australia). We bought it, and got
ONE useful bit of source code out of it...

Unix itself supports newsgroups, chat rooms, telnet in/out, etc. All you
need to do is secure it against people getting into the shell... Not as
easy as it sounds, but technically possible.

The 'tin' newsreader has compilation options to remove shell escapes.

I have copies of 'ee' and 'joe' that have all escapes and 'read file'
disabled.

IRC is easy to secure.

The 'lynx' text-based web browser can be run in restricted mode, closing
all shell escapes, or even restricting users to just your own internal
web site.
