Ok.  Someone else here posted that Virtual Hosting can cause the types
of problems we were having.  After checking into it with the sysop -
it turns out we had that option turned on.  After disabling VH,
everything seems to have settled down somewhat.  So I have to conclude
that SGIs and VH don't mix too well under Apache.  :-/
