Thanks-- we figured out that we needed to rebuild, and got the puppy 
running.  After a day, we haven't seen any of your described random 
panics, and this machine is pretty flakey overall; Dunno...

Now we're trying to figure out why PPP crashes.  Is there such a thing as 
an easy installation...? :>
