I have the same problem with my system.  My ATAPI CD-ROM drive on the 2nd
controller is never recognized, and my CD-ROM is jumpered to be the slave
device.  Recompiling the kernel after installation has never changed this.
Fortunately, I have a SCSI CD-ROM that comes to the rescue at times like
this.  If you have the disk space, you might try copying the relevant
installation directories to somewhere on a FAT directory on your hard drive.
You could then install from there.
