Subject: Please help! FreeBSD 2.1: XFree86 with #9 771 crashes and reboots!

I cannot get XFree86 to come up in my FreeBSD 2.1 installation.

When starting X, I get a black screen, a long delay, then a reboot.
I think (but am not sure) that the reboot might be a second or so
after moving the mouse. Any help would be most appreciated.

Please reply by email, I'll be out of town for a while and could
miss an expired posting!

I'm using the Number Nine FX Motion 771 video with 2meg of RAM.
My monitor is a 16" Mitsubishi HL6605TK (Diamond Scan series).
My mouse is a Logitech Bus Mouse.
My kernel does not include the Microsoft Mouse driver (I still
  crash if I include it).
My motherboard is an Intel Endeavor which has shown no indication
  of conflict with anything else.

My XF86Config file (in /etc) has the following entries:

    Protocol "BusMouse"
    Device "/dev/mouse"
