I have my login.conf set to use wide passwords. Here's a few lines from my
login.conf file:

full-default:\
	:auth=passwd:widepasswords:minpasswordlen=10:\
	:coredumpsize=infinity:\

etc.

I've noticed, however, that if I log in with various names, I can type 8
characters of the password and *still* be authenticated.

What gives? Am I missing something?

Thanks for any and all help.
