I would go for the router - at all costs!

The reason is :
-relability (not that bsdi is unstable, it is not, but a router
 is never brought down for backup etc, it is totally unaffected 
 bu users wanting to upgrade teh computer etc.
 -performance (you never even get close
 -functionality (virtually any routing protocol, virtually
  any mix of protoxols, easy setting of filters etc


But the suggested cisco 4500 might be overkill, if 
all you need as 2 interfaces a 2500 would do the job
perfectly well.
