Assuming you don't have something like a bus mouse on IRQ 5, this should
not be a problem. Are you using an internal modem or a serial card and
external modem? If the latter, be advised some serial cards don't have
complete ports in hardware; they use specialize drivers to make up the
difference. This upsets FreeBSD, which demands that the port be 'real.'

If that's not the problem, make sure this card is really addressed at
port 3E8. If it's at 2E8 for some reason (and some of them are), DOS
will still read it as COM3, but FreeBSD will have to be told explicitly.
