I keep hearing vague rumours that there is supposed to be a Sparc
   port of FreeBSD or such.

There are 3 freely available sparc ports that I know of:

1) OpenBSD	http://www.openbsd.org
2) NetBSD	http://www.netbsd.org
3) Linux	check around, I forget the URL

I've been quite involved in all of these, primarily the first two. I
maintain the OpenBSD port, and the Linux port is starting to look
rather interesting as well.

As far as I know, I was the first person to have a free unix running
on a sparcstation, wheen I ported Chris Torek's 4.4 stuff into NetBSD
years ago. But now I work on OpenBSD.
