In the case of AST, I had their latest bios. Adaptec wrote me back and
said the following:


Greetings from Adaptec:

        We do not support the FreeBSD OS but I can tell you that the AST
machine is 
your problem.  If you must use the AST system you should change the I/O
of 
the card to 130 (sw 4 on, sw 2 & 3 off).
        If this doesn't correct your problem you should disable the
external cache 
( I think AST refers to it as a writeback cache).
