There is a benchmarking packages called MusBus that comes from Monash U.
in Australia.  (more specifically,  kenj@bruce.cs.monash.oz.AU)  This is
a package that simulates a time-sharing workload.  I'm not aware that it
has been updated in several years, and we didn't put enough effort into 
getting it to run correctly on recent OSes, but it might be of interest
in connection with this topic.
