I've tried the following:

3 adaptec cards (2 1542B, 1 1542C)
2 CPU's (acer 486 clone, zenith pentium)
2 scsi cables
2 terminators as well as termination on the drive itself
2 different disk drives, tho both were conner 1080S's
formatting the drives before installing freebsd.

bsd/os loaded flawlessly, so I assume the hardware is OK and it's a
configuration issue.
