There is actually a replacement for mgetty which may be more suitable
to modern needs. A contract I was doing for Vixie Enterprises
required something mgetty-like, but when I suggested just porting
mgetty, Paul (the author) encouraged me to just start over - he claims
mgetty was originally written for Ultrix 1.0, and its time has passed.

The replacement is called modemd. It's freely available, and can be
had from ftp://ftp.vix.com/pub/modemd/modemd-960909.tar.gz.

I just generated a new release which includes some handy new features,
including the ability to have incoming modem lines automatically
detect incoming PPP or interactive logins and do the right thing. Of
course, as somebody else in this thread mentioned, you need to be able
to do PAP or CHAP in order for this feature to be useful.

In addition to the original mgetty functionality, modemd also provides
the ability to maintain pools of outgoing modems through the mpoold
daemon, as well as many more bells and whistles for incoming calls.
