and there is also the gnu project for a public domain fortran 77 
compiler, a.k.a. "g77".  the compiler is currently in alpha test.
for more information (in particular, how to subscribe to the 
info-gnu-fortran list), finger -l fortran@gnu.ai.mit.edu.
this is a true compiler, not a translator.  however, it
relies on gcc for the final pass(es) (at least this is
what i have understood).
