i'd like to start off by saying "damn! my disk crashed!".

that out of the way, perhaps some kind soul can help; i have
a (relatively) peculiar situation:

i *just* finished installing and configuring 2.1.5R on my
compaq aero subnote. i have 12MB ram and another 34MB swap.

i was running X without a problem, and pc-card services to
use my pcmcia modem. i was in X with 3 xterms open, running
vi and man pages (in the middle of setting /etc/ppp) when
one of my windows gave a short out of memory error. i then
tried 'top' in one of my others, at which point everything
went down as if i had power cycled the machine (including POST).
upon trying to boot, the machine keeps looping and rebooting
once it tries loading the kernel from disk.

now, my problem: i can't use the fixit floppy because once
the boot floppy loads, i'm unable to mount any more floppies.
this is likely because the floppy is a pcmcia plug-in type
and works on the first shot to boot but then fbsd doesn't
get fdc0 registered correctly and it's all down-hill from there.
the way i installed was to boot from the boot flop and then
install from a small DOS partition that i have on my hard disk.

can anyone recommend a 'unified' fixit floppy (with a kernel
already onboard) that i can just boot?

as i can't get to my fs, i still have no idea what actually
went wrong to trash /. i'd also appreciate any hints on how
to track down what sucked up 46+ MB of memory and made my
machine crash so ungracefully.

thanks in advance! please reply in both post and email.
