You are not, per chance, tripping over some file descriptor limit in
select?

I don't know when it has been fixed in FreeBSD (if ever), but 4.4BSD's
select() kernel code had a limit on the highest numbered file
descriptor.  Namely the value of FD_SETSIZE at the time the kernel was
compiled.
