FreeBSD is generally considered to have a very stable VM
system. Strange problems like this which are triggered by hard
work are often traced to dodgy RAM, which won't always be found
by "lesser" OSs. Try swapping some SIMMs and looking at the
results. The specific nature of your problems also suggest a
problem with swap, could the HD or controller used for swap be
problematic?
