No it didn't. Apart from identifying itself to the driver it didn't 
seem to do much at all, so I punted it in favour of a similar NEC ATAPI
drive, powered up the system, and now *everything* works.

I'm pleased to report that *all* audio tools I've tried work with this
drive: workman, xmcd, xcd, cdcontrol, etc.

I would agree, and I do have quite a nice sound system for the house

I did, but before they could respond I followed up my request with
a don't-worry-I-punted-the-drive-in-favour-of-one-that-works message.
