hi. i'm sort of desperate at this point, so i thought i'd ask you all
if anybody's had this problem before me.

i'm trying to install NetBSD 1.1 in a Compaq ProSignia 486 system
that used to be a netware server. i've installed an
Adaptec 1542CP board and a 2-gig HP disk drive, plus two
3c509 network cards. everything seems to be configured properly,
and i'm able to format, mount and use the disk drive when
booted from the kernel floppy. however, i can't seem to get the
system to boot from its hard disk.

the NetBSD boot loader does get installed, and that comes up
on boot, and its default boot string is wd(0,a)/netbsd. that
doesn't work, and it doesn't really seem right anyway. all of
the following boot strings cause the boot process to hang:

wd(0,a)/netbsd
sd(0,a)/netbsd
hd(0,a)/netbsd

... and if i try hd(1,a)/netbsd, i get a looping string of
errors about head, track and cylinder zero -- seems like i'm
accessing a nonexistent disk in that case. are there other
boot strings i could try, or flags i could specify to get
more info?

i am pretty sure i got the geometry correct, using the numbers
provided by the kernel boot messages. (the drive has
2630 cyls, 18 heads, 87 secs/cyl, and 512 bytes/sec.) if
there's a non-obvious aspect to obtaining these values, i
probably missed it.

any tips, suggestions or warnings would be greatly
appreciated.
