What's wrong with the one supplied w/ the system ?

$ ls -l /usr/sbin/sendmail
-r-sr-xr-x  3 root  bin  245760 Mar 23 14:51 /usr/sbin/sendmail

Have a look in /usr/ports (on your CD or on ftp.freebsd.org).  It's
a collection of patches to make stuff compile on FreeBSD (original
sites are mentioned in the Makefiles) - check out the handbook too
in /usr/share/doc/handbook/* and the FAQ in /usr/share/doc/FAQ/*
