Unfortunately, not all IDE CDROMs work.  However, I would suggest that you
try connecting the CDROM as a Slave to your Harddisk which should be
strapped as a master.  For some reason, the boot floppy will not find the
CDROM on the second controller if it is the only device (with some
exceptions).

I have found that Chinon ADAPTI / IDE CDROMs work without problems with all
FreeBSD releases since 2.1R, and at least in the Chicago area, the are
cheap!! <$100 for 4X and <$150 for 8X.

The Chinon drives also will boot on either disk controller :)
