I recently tried to connect an HP laserjet 5MP to my
bsdi 2.1 system (most but not all patches applied).
My parallel port appears to be hardware configured OK.
I rebooted the machine with the printer turned on and
connected. lp0 did not appear on the boot up list of
recognized devices and attempts to cat a file to /dev/lp0
produced a message "port not configured". According to
the bsdi 2.1 install guide, the O/S should recognize
the parallel port automatically.

Do I need to do anything to configure the parallel port
to the O/S ? Or do I need to carry my computer back to
the dealer and get a hardware checkout of the parallel
port ?
