Just for grins -- there is a pop client package in the packages
distribution as far back as 2.1R. I use it under the cron daemon to pull
in mail for myself and my two kids from several different sources. This
popclient package works with either POP2 or POP3, and can be set to run
in quiet mode so there are no messages unless an error occurs.
