This is just a quick "piece of knowledge" that people may require when
connecting to their ISP using iijppp. I'm posting this specifically
because Demon (my ISP) were unable to tell me why my my connection stopped
working after they changed their phone number. I asked them over and over
what had changed with the ppp server and they said "nothing" (they said
that the modem had changed and wanted me to change my modem, even though I
could log in - just couldn't talk ppp).

After talking for a long time to Demon on the phone, I told them that I
would go away and figure out what had changed on their side, then send them
email to tell them. I did, asking them to inform their front line support
staff so that I wasn't told lies again, but they didn't respond, so I'm not
sure if the info made it.

Anyway, the long & short of it is that Demon have changed their ppp server
so that it doesn't initiate negotiations with the client side. Using
iijppp, the default (when you initiate a connection) is to wait for the
server to start negotiations. If you can log in, see packets being sent,
but don't get any traffic returned, try

    set openmode active

in ppp.conf.

Does anyone know if the rfc says who starts negotiations ? Are Demon
wrong ?
