I'm not specifically familiar with the Supra Fax Modem you describe, so 
this thought may not be applicable to your case, but...

Some of the no-name and cheaper modems do not really have a full-function 
serial port built in. Instead, they rely on specific software drivers to 
complete the functioning of the port. If this applies in your case, 
you're stuck, because FreeBSD looks for a full-function port so it can 
run standardized software.
