So since you are familiar with dip already, why don't you simply use
it also on FreeBSD?

Dip has been ported to NetBSD by Joachim Bartz at the University
Clausthal, Germany.  (This actually turned into a major rewrite -- go
figure.)  I've picked his work and prepared a FreeBSD port from it.
