FreeBSD-current has direct support for ext2fs.  On pre-FreeBSD-2.2
systems,
the only way to share data between linux and FreeBSD via a partition is
probably through a MS-DOS file system.  This is a whole another can of
worms.

Running linux binaries through emulation has been possible at least back
to
FreeBSD-2.1.
