XFree86 is excellent software (for example, I do not know that any MS
SW will let me choose the best resolution for my hardware).

It is free for us, but does need some support (to pay X-consortium
membership fees for example). Some companies have shown support and/or
interest, thus helping them.
  Buying their products from these companies is one way to say thank
you, and to support indirectly the XFree86 effort.

I should add that I do not remember seeing Matrox listed there, since
buying Matrox was a recent discussion topic.

I am not personally connected to the XFree86 effort.
