Here's your explanation: Matrox is top dog, Diamond wasn't. When
XFree86 folks complain about the specs, Matrox doesn't feel any
financial pain. Diamond felt it and thus they responded. And
actually, it took Diamond quite awhile to respond. Maybe "Matrox
resistance" needs a lot more time to simmer. Then again, maybe Matrox
will remain top dog, and thereby be capable of blowing off whomever
they please.

Let's put it another way. The freeware universe, and particularly
Linuxers, are always making the mistake of thinking that their market
is a gift from God or something. It isn't. It's tiny. It's paltry.
It's growing, but one should keep in mind a certain sense of scale
before declaring that someone like Matrox's strategy is
"self-defeating."

To be honest, I'm reasonably concerned that the freeware community is
incapable of providing good 3d support for all these boards. I'm
expressing my "concern" by ducking the whole issue and concentrating
on i486 software-only renderers with limited functionality. It's a
job that I can personally get done, it's enough for the distributed VR
stuff I want to do, and it buys me a lot of time for all this 3d
accelerator, MMX, AGI, OpenGL, Direct3D crap to blow over.

Cheers,
