Not sure I can help but I'll try. I'm assuming that the case has
changed but that the tube is the same so here are the specs.
for Compaq 140 and 150 monitors:

vertical:
31.5 khz	70 hz	640x350
31.5 khz	60 hz	640x480
37.5 khz	75 hz	640x480-VESA timing
31.5 khz	70 hz	720x400
37.8 khz	60 hz	800x600-VESA timing
46.9 khz	75 hz	800X600-VESA timing
48.4 khz	60 HZ	1024X768-VESA timing

horizontal:
50 to 100 hz

Therefor best I could do with this monitor was 1024x768.

After setting up X you can use <ctrl><alt><number pad + or ->
to run through the different screen sizes.

send you more detailed info on how to try and do it.
