A note from personal experience: FreeBSD 2.1.5-R will not run reliably on
an Amptron 9500-DX motherboard with an AMD 133mhz 486dx4 cpu. After about
a week of swapping SIMMS, changing timing values and reinstalling freebsd
about a half dozen times (that spike in Internet usage 2 weeks ago? --
that was me ;-) ), I finally traded up to an Amptron 7600 and all is
smooth as silk now. Didn't change anything else besides recompiling the
kernel with i586 instead of i486.

Maybe somebody else will benefit from my misfortune...
