Thanks for the info everyone... we've decided not to use one of the Vectras
as our server, and just put up with the old Pentium job, with a nice vanilla
flavored net card.   We _do_ have a 100VG hub, and my gut reaction would be 
'Yes! Great! Let's start writing!', but we can't justify the time, since
we spent two wasted months thanks to Microsoft's erroneous documentation.. :(

Maybe later in the year, when things quiet down a bit, I'll be able to persuade
the powers-that-be to let me use one of the machines as an experimental server.
