Paul,
We have to have just a little bit more information here.  I've got atleast
5 machines that use dial-up dynamic PPP and they all run fine.

Does the system dial?
If it does dial does it properly login?
If it logins in what type of messages does pppd report?

You may want to read the manpages on both pppd and chat and setup syslog
to route these two log streams to a log file.
