I'm having similar problems with a Matsushita 4x (also ATAPI).  I don't
have a solution handy, but I'm looking into it.  Of course, I forced
FreeBSD onto a Packard Bell, and it's working okay with that one exception
(so far), so I'm not exactly complaining.
