Has anyone had any luck installing Excite for Web Servers on a virtual server?

I have been working for several days on such an install and get all the way to the point
where I actually index a "collection" and the following fatal erros occur:

"ran out of virtual memory"
"no .dat file"
"cannot open AT-{dbname}search.cgi for writing"

The problem seems to lie in pathing statements:

some functions of EWS need to reference the actual server root, while others need to
reference the root of my virtual.

Thanks for your time......
