What version of FreeBSD are you trying to install?  The release notes
for 2.1.5 say (among other things):

   3.2. Ethernet cards
   -------------------
   ...
   Intel EtherExpress Pro/100B PCI Fast Ethernet
   ...
   Novell NE1000, NE2000, and NE2100 ethernet interface.
   ...
