To the best of my knowledge, Sparc serial ports are limited to 9600 baud.
I don't know this for a fact, but it is something that I have heard.
If they are indeed limited in this respect, then you would have problems
like what you mentioned above.

The basic problem is that you need a 16550 UART to do serial work faster
than 9600 bps.  The fifo buffer on anything less than a 16550 is too
small and will overrun.
